The Maryland and Virginia docked at the marina and were quickly met by Lenn.

Episode 63:

“Welcome to the Chesapeake Bay area,” Lenn greeted as she boarded the trawler, “This is our first fishing trip of the year. Fortunately, the weather is a warm 52º, the wind almost calm at 7 mph out of the NE and the waves today are about 1 ft., not a problem for the Maryland & Virginia.”

“We’re all so glad to meet you,” Ines replied, “Your ‘hard core real estate’ posts are a must-read for everyone here.”

“How’s fishing?” Sarah asked.Lenn & Friends Goin’ Fishin’ ©2008 New Codgers

“Spring fishing is great on the Chesapeake Bay waters,” Lenn smiled, “with the majestic Bay and it’s wealth of fish and shell fish and, of course, the delicious Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab.”

“The fog is clearing,” Maggie noted, “The beauty of the Chesapeake is becoming visible.”

They were soon all packed with fishing gear for everyone. The gear for bay fishing is heavier than is used on local lakes and reservoirs for fresh water fishing, but it’s necessary to handle the depths and the weights needed to get to the fish in the Chesapeake Bay, many of which are bottom feeders, like the delicious Flounder.

“Now that everyone is ready, let’s take a trip northwest and visit some of the local points of interest.” Lenn suggested.

“We’ll do a bit of trolling in case we come across an area where the mighty Stripped Bass are schooling,” she explained, “A more delicious fish is hard to find, but the season isn’t here yet. We’ll be fishing with Blood Worms, so there’s no telling what we’ll catch. Just about every fish in the bay will take a fat juicy Blood Worm.”

“I know they make me hungry,” Bob cracked—everyone pretended not to have heard him.

“There’s the Calvert Cliffs in Calvert County,” Lenn, as she checked out the boat, said, “a wonderful location to look for ancient shark teeth fossils of the Miocene era. Much of the area is privately owned but we can anchor off the shores of the Calvert Cliffs State Park.”Fishin’ off Calvert Cliffs ©2008 New Codgers

Soon the Maryland & Virginia arrived at Calvert Cliffs, and Cap dropped anchor. Cap & Edith set about preparing the boat to receive fish—checking all the live wells—making sure all had a sufficient supply of Blood Worms (and admonishing Bob to use them for bait—not for lunch).

With Lenn overseeing the operation, our heroes spread out around the boat got their lines wet—even the reluctant fisherman Boomer, who needed some help baiting his hook:

“Shucks, Boomer,” she said, somewhat amused at his discomfort, “It’s easy, watch and learn. I thought Minnesota was the land of ‘10,000 Lakes,’ how can you not know how to bait a hook?”

“I am an outcast,” Boomer replied as he somewhat reluctantly began to fish (and fearing he might actually catch one).

  3. Lil bit of Blood Worms and Old Bay… just might be a tasty snack. :)

  4. Like Lysa, I deal in freeze-dried for my little fishie buddies.

I can bait a hook (heck, a whole trot line) but I hate taking them off. I’d rather not catch anything. ;)

  5. And a good time was had by all.

Now let’s catch some Spot for lunch and try out that cooker.

    Like reading a good novel.

BOB!!! Put the worm down. Lunch will be in less than an hour.

  6. I need help baiting my hook as well…..Boomer is not the only one. It totally grosses me out. That and roaches.

As for fishing…….fun!! We troll here in Miami and catch Dolphin (mahi-mahi), not the pretty fish and it’s delicious!

Frederick Foto Friday: Thanks for the link-love!
Bob: I can’t even bait a hook, much less eat the bait! ;-)
    Lenn: LOL! :-)
Ines: You are SUCH a freeze-baby! 52 is shirtsleeve weather for us in February (a bit chilly in July, though)! ;-)

  8. I still have a few more episodes to read before I’m caught up.

  9. John: Soon then, you’ll qualify as a “Danger Bay Expert,” if you’re not one already! ;-)
