It is yet another fine morning here in Old Saint Paul, Minnesota! My trusty replica “Pruett’s Pig Powders” thermometer claims a morning temperature of +64ºF. Today we are expecting a partly cloudy day with a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, and a high temperature between 80º & 82ºF. Summer’s finally here, doncha know!
The only city in Minnesota is Minneapolis, the rest of the state is populated by Lutheran church ladies, bumpkin farmers, and a number of hunter/fishermen thrown into the mix. Oh, and we all talk as if we came off the set of “Fargo!” Yah-sure, you betcha!
So, about now your thinking: “Oh crap, another Minnesotan ranting about Minnesota stereotypes!” Although I suppose there is much to write about there, not this time.
Today, I want to share some thoughts on changing stereotypes. No matter how you embark on this Herculean endeavor, you must understand that your success will be limited. Some people are just not going to accept what you have to say. I don’t claim expertise on changing perceptions, but my two cents worth, anyway:
- Be honest—stereotypes are based on fact—recognize that. (There ARE Minnesotans who actually speak “Minnesotan,” you betcha!)
- Promote the good stuff, but don’t ignore the other stuff, be genuine in your writing.
- A little self-deprecating humor may effectively disarm critics.
- Finally, write from the heart.
I can’t guarantee this will work—stereotypes don’t ever die completely—people are comfortable in their biases—but if you can change one mind…
So why did I write this? I have a very dear friend who lives in my computer, at least that’s where I find her. Sarah Cooper really lives in West Virginia. West Virginia took a lot of negative hits in the national media, particularly during and after the primary elections. Understandably, She is not happy with the stereotypes portrayed by the media, and moreover the country writ large.
Sarah, and a number of other WV bloggers are on a campaign to re-define West Virginia and combat the negative stereotype of their beloved state. Take a peek at what they have to say.
Do it! Do it now!
