Danger Bay—a Location, a New Look & a Story Synopsis

Silverthorn Avenue in Danger Bay ©2008 New CodgersIf our “Danger Bay” really existed, it would be on the high granite bluffs overlooking Lake Superior somewhere between Two Harbors and Grand Marais, Minnesota, some six miles East of Minnesota Highway 61, and until 1980, along the original US Highway 61§. From Duluth to Two Harbors, US 61 was moved inland as a four-lane expressway and the old highway along the lake became County Road 61.

Many resorts and tourist attractions failed with the move of the main highway, ‘though some have survived. Thus it is so with our fictional Danger Bay with the re-routing of US 61 in 1980. The highway was rerouted because of several tight turns and the very steep grade leading into Danger Bay.

Historic US 61 begins at the intersection of Silverthorn & State Highway 61, and extends East six miles to Farkleberry Road where it turns North and continues along the bluff for about ten miles where it reconnects with SH 61. It follows the historic route of Minnesota US 61.

Silverthorn Avenue begins at State Highway 61, and continues East through the village and dead ends at the lake bluff about a quarter mile from the intersection.

The intersection of Farkleberry Road and Silverthorn Avenue serves as Danger Bay’s business district, and conveniently, it is the only intersection within the village limits.

Farkleberry Road extends South from the intersection about three quarters of a mile where it dead ends at the high bluff overlooking Big Lake, and North from the intersection a mile to the village limits.Big A in Town © 2008 New Codgers

A little tourism, and a small but thriving commercial fishing operation kept Danger Bay a vibrant little village, its peak population in 1970 some 237 people.

The coming of “The Sparrow Big Lake Cruise Company,” was viewed by most of the 37 remaining residents as their best opportunity to bring the struggling village back. The exception is Mayor George Gamboge and his wife Millie, who we have learned, conspired with Allen Stanley Simpson (known as “Big A”), main minion of Sig Hanssen owner of Big Lake Cruises, first to prevent and then to destroy the competition.

Today the MV Sparrow, with most of the townsfolk is approaching the last Port-of-Call of its winter-long voyage along the Eastern Seaboard, Miami Beach, while Big A, and the Gamboges (who left the cruise and returned to Danger Bay) continue their nefarious activities.

Today we revealed Danger Bay’s location and its new look (unless Big A and the Gamboges are successful), and a mini-synopsis of the storyline, so please join our Gentle Readers as this story continues.
