He motioned to Fensterwald to join him several feet away from the wagon, “For a small ‘inspection fee’ Mr. Fensterwald, I won’t notice that there are several men hiding in the wagons.”

“How much of a fee are talking about?”

“How much is it worth to you for me to make sure I’m the only one inspecting all future shipments?”

“I will have to speak with Mr. Spenser before we can determine a specific amount, however, I am prepared to pay $250 for this shipment.”

“That’s acceptable, Mr. Fensterwald—this time. Mr. Spenser must understand it will require a higher permanent fee for access through this port.”

Newly-minted Deputy Town Marshal Brave Hawk Silverthorn and Marshal Blackmon joined Tadusz Sezavich, Great-Grandfather of Silas “Cap” Sezavich, Little Wolf James Silverthorn, his fiance Nitika, and Medlar Farkleberry in Silverthorn Trading, “Well little brother, the badge becomes you.”

“A piece of ‘white-eyes-jewelry’ to decorate my tunic,” Brave Hawk was actually quite proud of this piece of jewelry—and had no idea he would be remembered as the first town marshal of the village, “We have much to prepare for, my brother.”

“Good help is so hard to find,” neither her expression nor the tone of her voice gave away Susie’s tease, “Brave Hawk is right, there are dozens of former border raiders in the area.”

“We must bring the homesteaders into the safety of the village as soon as possible.”

“Den ve bedder get wordt to dem now Chames!” Sezavich began walking to the door, “Ve may be too late awready!”

Doc Shouse and Deputy Marshal Cooper were only momentarily disoriented by finding themselves riding on the road to William’s Station—a good thing, really, considering…
