Murder!

Previously:

With Nathaniel securely in the stagecoach, Cyrus Bishop reclaimed his rightful place as owner/operator atop the stagecoach, and after Susan spent a short time with Alice, they departed for Moosehead City.

Marshal Blackmon, Deputy Marshals Cooper and Brave Hawk Silverthorn, James Silverthorn and Doc Shouse left for Danger Bay and US Marshal Carl McIntyre, Deputies Boomer & Larry, Town Marshal Williams and Professor Hare left with the stagecoach for Williams’ Station. Carl, Boomer and Larry would continue on with the stagecoach to Moosehead City.

The dog-people lingered a few moments with Flutters, before separating to catch up with their respective humans.

There was one thought in the minds of all, critters and humans…

What’s next?

[Afterword]

And then news spread throughout the county—there had been a murder in Grand Marais…

Season VI, Chapter 3 Trackdown, Episode 1:

He had been missing for a week when his body was found, and curiously enough, Deputy Town Marshal Randolph Kidd had left “on assignment” at about the same time, along with a recently-hired new deputy McLintock—their whereabouts unknown.

His remains were found quite by accident by surveyors mapping a new logging site claim some twelve miles from Grand Marais—he’d been shot in the back. It took them half a day to bring the body back to town.

Mac's face registered sorrow and a very deep resolve—he WOULD find those responsible...

It was then that Jimmy Byrne took it upon himself to send a telegraph message to District US Marshal Carl McIntyre in Moosehead City.

After reading the message, Mac’s face registered sorrow and a very deep resolve—he WOULD find those responsible…

After speaking with her sons, Howard and Timothy (both of whom have been redrawn to look a little older—in case you didn’t notice, GENTLE READER), Susan was certain her business was in good hands with the boys. Timothy had, according to Professor Hare, an aptitude and more importantly an interest in economics in general, and business economics in particular. And Howard? His flair for cooking and baking equaled her own.

Soon she, Alice and Benji would set out for her first stop—Moosehead City.

Both encouraged her to take some time off—away from Seven Tables, and now her small one-horse (actually…a mule) wagon was loaded for an adventure. Soon she, Alice and Benji would set out for her first stop—Moosehead City.

She had no idea just what kind of adventure…

To be Continued…

I was using random kids I drew for the orphanage, and in any case – they were terrible-teens when you adopted them. 😉

I watch too much Law and Order, I was cringing at the idea that the surveyors brought the body back rather than bringing authorities to it … but I suppose it makes the most sense when it takes half a day just to get there!

…and I watch too much NCIS, where preserving the crime scene so the investigators is of the utmost importance…HOWEVER – in 1873…they knew nothing of forensics:

“Lookie here, Clem, he’s been back-shot; best git th’ body back t’ town–before the scavengers git to it.”

About all they could do. 😦
