Susan was certain her business was in good hands with the boys. Timothy had, according to Professor Hare, an aptitude and more importantly an interest in economics in general, and business economics in particular. And Howard? His flair for cooking and baking equaled her own.

Both encouraged her to take some time off—away from Seven Tables, and now her small one-horse (one-mule, actually) wagon was loaded for an adventure. Soon she, Alice and Benji would set out for her first stop—Moosehead City.

She had no idea just what kind of adventure…

US Marshal Carl McIntyre told his deputies of the murder of their friend Angus McGillicuddy near Grand Marais, “We’ve been ordered by St. Louis to track down his killers. I’ve sent a message to Marshal Blackmon to meet us in Moosehead City and bring Sarah Cooper and Doc Shouse, and one to Marshal Williams to ask Professor Hare and that new arrival, Susan Miller to go with us. We need their help.”

There was none of the usual grousing from either of Mac’s deputies as Boomer asked, “What now, boss?”

Town Marshal Susie Blackmon, Sarah Cooper and Chris Shouse were (a little too conveniently, if you ask me, GENTLE READER) gathered, as they usually do in the morning, at Silverthorn Trading for a fine cup of coffee when James Silverthorn returned from his telegraph office, “I have a message for you from Marshal McIntyre…”

“Oh...no...” Cooper was just getting used to a normal routine helping out at the trading post.

“Oh boy!” Doc Shouse exclaimed. She loved adventures.

“Oh great,” Marshal Blackmon said mildly, resigned to whatever Big Mac required, “Let’s see the message.”

She read the message—twice, before looking up at her friends, “Pack up and saddle-up, Angus McGillicuddy has been shot, and Mac needs our help.”

As Susan was about to leave town, she stopped to talk with Professor Hare. Before they had a chance to speak, they were joined by Bill Williams, “G’morning, Bill, what’s up?”

“G'morning, Bill, what's up?”

“G’mornin’ Erik,” Marshal Williams quickly told Erik and Susan of Mac’s request, “Mac asked specifically for you wait here for him to arrive. You’ll need some pack mules and supplies.”

“I can send a message to Grand Marais, they have a good supply of canned food at the Mercantile,” Susan was already planning, “and the boys can rig this wagon as a chuckwagon—at least we can have civilized meals.”

Erik wondered to himself, “Why me? I’m no lawman. Mac must have a reason.”
