Interviewing Fensterwald

Previously:

He started to walk into the main lobby when he was stopped in mid-turn by Deputy US Marshal Blackmon, “Mr. Fensterwald, I presume?”

Er—yes, yes I’m Chauncey Fensterwald, at your service, Marshal…um…”

My name is not important, but your relationship with Deputy Kidd is what I’m interested in,” Susie just knew there was something he was hiding, “We know he gave you special inspections; conveniently overlooking certain—irregularities?”

Susie knew nothing of the sort, but Fensterwald simply looked guilty as hell…

Season VI, Chapter 3 Trackdown, Episode 6:

Fensterwald may have looked guilty to Blackmon, but he recovered quickly—after all he’d been quite successful over the years in wriggling out of this kind of a situation, “Yes Marshal, we had an agreement; he would not closely inspect my wagons, concentrating instead on the horses being shipped to Mr. Spenser. I was being paid by a Major McLintock to hire and import workers for his horse-farm. It wasn’t my business to wonder why as I was compensated; only for recruiting wranglers for McLintock and horses for Spenser.”

If not you, then who paid Kidd?”

“If not you, then who paid Kidd?”

Probably McLintock. As I said, that was not my concern.”

You know those men were not simply wranglers?”

I only just learned. I’ve been in St. Louis and only returned here yesterday.”

Blackmon considered what she’d learned, and what to do about Fensterwald. She looked at Big Mac, who simply nodded, “Very-well, Mr. Fensterwald. Be on the next steamer out of town, and don’t stop traveling until you are back in St. Louis. Come back here and you’ll be tossed in jail—with no guarantee of ever going to trial.”

Fensterwald, counting his blessings—yet again, would indeed be on the next steamer departing Grand Marais.

That much?” Sarah repeated.

“That much?” Sarah repeated.

We can’t spare the people to help you, Deputy, so the town of Grand Marais is paying for your supplies. It’s the least we can do for Marshal Angus. You find the bastards who did this—that will be payment enough.”

To be Continued…
