The marshals were discussing the rather boring topic of the rather boring day they’d somehow managed to muddle through—there had been too many such days since they entered the Dakota Territory, when Larry FlutterMatters glided in to a perfect landing in front of them, “For a pint of that brown ale, I’ll tell you what I’ve learned.”
“If you tell us what you’ve learned, I’ll reholster this double-barreled shotgun, loaded with bird-shot,” Mac smiled ominously, lying very convincingly—it was loaded with double-ought buckshot.
Flutters having survived a near-miss from a Henry Rifle, decided that it might just be in his best interest to spill his guts—while he still had them to spill, “Kidd and McLintock hired some gunmen, and with their help, plan on taking over the town of Dreadwood (Yes, GENTLE READER—Dreadwood, the historic town of Deadwood was my first choice—but then I’d have to draw the Black Hills—not gonna do it!).”
He went on to explain how they planned to do this.
Season VI, Chapter 4 Predators and Victims, Episode 3:
“Now that we’ve heard their plan,” Mac looked a little grim, “Anyone have any ideas how we can counter it?”
There was silence as each thought about the news Flutters detailed. Susan had finished feeding the hungry canines, and was brought up to date by Susie Blackmon. Curiously, it was she that came up with a way to get set-up in Dreadwood that might not raise alarms with McLintock & Kidd, “This might seem a bit foolish, but I could open a new bakery and restaurant in the town.”
Chief Deputy US Marshal Blackmon was intrigued, but cautious, “Won’t they recognize you?”
Professor Hare had been quiet, seemingly at least to the others, not fully paying attention, his mind elsewhere during the entire briefing, “That’s brilliant!”
“Welcome back, Erik,” Boomer laughed, “What’s brilliant?”
“As far as I know neither this Kidd fellow nor McLintock were ever in Williams’ Station and since Susan & I are not well-known as peace officers—we could pull it off without suspicion. We’re the only ones among us who could do that.”
There was complete silence as the marshals mulled this over.
To Be Continued…
By gosh it could work!
