The rest of the marshals decided to remain in Huron an extra week to give Erik and Susan more time to get set up in Dreadwood. When they left and after crossing the Missouri River at Pierre, they broke into three teams before turning south; Boomer & Chris, Sarah & Larry, and Susie & Mac. They also removed their badges—no sense announcing the presence of so many US Marshals on the move. They planned to set up a semi-permanent camp outside Murdo, the closest town to Dreadwood.
What they didn’t plan on, occurred north of Murdo…
Season VI, Chapter 4 Predators and Victims, Episode 9:
Incident North of Murdo
US Deputy Marshals Boomer Jack & Chris Shouse were about two hours behind US Marshal Carl McIntyre & Chief Deputy US Marshal Susie Blackmon and two hours ahead of Deputy US Marshals Sarah Cooper and Larry Yatkowski, and were approaching the point where Blackmon & McIntyre turned off the road to their new camp a few miles north of Murdo.

It took her a second to realize Boomer didn’t finish his predictable complaint about being a reluctant muleteer, she turned just on time to see Boomer fall out of the saddle…
Mac and Susie found a suitable spot to set up their semi-permanent camp in a grove of trees near a stream. The grove was thick enough to completely hide the campsite from view, and the stream supplied clear fresh water. Mac decided to go into town and see what the locals were talking about—his reasoning why it should be he, instead of Susie was fairly simple—she was unusually tall for a woman in the 1870s, while a black cowboy, no matter how tall, was reasonably common. Susie was not all that happy, but reasoned, “Too many cowboys—not enough time.”

Riding cross-country, Mac arrived in Murdo in an hour, and within minutes found himself in deep trouble…
Ralph Crenshaw and Willie McCallum were from Alabama by way of Texas and the Civil War, just didn’t cotton to all them damn Nigra cowboys allowed to wrangle longhorns down there in Texas. They’d heard that the Dakota Territory was populated by Scandinavians and Injuns and were more than a little surprised to see that big buck walk into the saloon…

The tragedy of Susie’s life . . “Too many cowboys—not enough time.” And just wait ’til Susan gets her restaurant going. Cowboys and longhorn wranglers will be lined up for her biscuits and sausage gravy. Speaking of sausages….. tell us more about that big buck.

Ummmm…the brown ale is in a keg, safely secured to the mules and out-of-reach because Deputy US Marshal Yatkowsky was found to be RUI (Riding Under the Influence) and we could not afford another ticket. Sorry, Birdbrain…you’re wrong…yet again. 😛

Methinks thinks Fluttermatters that all this “Cliff hanging” will leave us with “bummer’s” which for those who have never been to the bluest of blue mountains west of the beyond and slightly east of the just before is a slang word, used usually to describe a difficult or uncomfortable hold, often one that tears the skin on the hand..
