Silence

Previously:

May I help you, sir?” Susan, ever the attentive host asked.

You might,” the man replied, “You may have heard of me, name’s Derby. I’m looking for someone.”

This “Derby” made even Boomer a bit nervous—he was obviously a professional “Shootist,” and not to be trifled with, “Who might that someone be, Derby?”

Randolph Kidd.”

Boomer smiled, this could work out well for him, “He’s the town Marshal, he’s in his office.”

Thank you,” Derby said, tipping his derby as he slowly turned and ambled out the door.

Season VI, Chapter 5 Coldwater Ranch, Episode 20—Conclusion:

The Coldwater/Blue Dog mustang expedition returned home with the exception of Susie Blackmon and Larry Yatkowsky who delivered the surviving rustlers to the county sheriff.

The county sheriff’s income was augmented by Benjamin McLintock and five minutes after Blackmon and Yatkowsky left town, he had one of the rustlers conk him on the head just hard enough to leave a lump, and they “escaped” out of Murdo and across the river into the next county and the Triple Bar-X Ranch.

Big Mac had some distressing news for his deputies and Jay Cooper, news he really didn’t want to share, “It appears that Boomer has decided to join Kidd and McLintock.”

Everyone was sunned to silence, except Jay Cooper, who really had no history of working with Boomer Jack, “How do you know this?”

I just received a telegraph message from Erik. I won’t go into details now, but we have to accept what he says. Susie, you’re in charge, Larry and I must go to Dreadwood.”

Boomer Jack and Professor Hare walked over to the saloon, both at this point really in need of what passed for beer in this miserable town, “Did you send the message to Mac?”

“Did you send the message to Mac?”

I did, and I covered my butt—for now. But you know Carl will take action once he gets over the shock.”

Poor naive Mac.”

Yes.”

Derby surprised Kidd as he walked into the marshal’s office, but Kidd was a gunfighter and he reacted the only way he knew how.

The people on the boardwalk outside the office heard three quick gunshots—and then—silence.
