James Butler Hickok

Previously:

With amazing speed when one considers that Professor Hare could never be mistaken for a shootist, he drew his Navy Colt .44 and pointed it at McLintock’s chest, “You’re correct—I’ll withdraw that request, and as a bonus, I’ll not kill you where you stand. Do not cross me, the cost to you is too dear.”

Just then the door opened and a tall man with long golden hair walked in, Good evening, Marshal, it appears you might need my help…”

Season VI, Chapter 6 Renegade Marshal, Episode 4:

My name is…”

…James Butler Hickok,” Erik couldn’t keep himself from blurting out, “Aces and eights.”

Beg pardon?”

Oh, never mind. Yes Mr. Hickok, I am seeking a reliable deputy. Mr. McLintock, will you excuse us?”

After glancing at the portrait of Hickok Kidd had hung on the wall, and at Hickok, McLintock left the office thinking to himself, “Wild Bill Hickok…great disgusting luck.”

Moments later, James Butler Hickok was wearing a deputy town marshal’s badge—and heading for the saloon to play poker.

That night as they camped, Pal finally had the opportunity to speak privately with Daisy. The fact that it was a private conversation, GENTLE READER, I find I am unable to describe what was said.

What I CAN tell you is the following morning Daisy’s whole demeanor had changed—tail wagging as she sniffed-out Derby’s trail and chatting with both Pal and Boomer Jack as she did.

Boomer was baffled—yet happy that Daisy seemed to accept his new direction—as it was far more profitable.

Alpha-Boomer, I detect a faint odor of another—it’s similar to Derby’s and it may be his—I’m just not certain.”

Thanks Daisy, keep trying to confirm that—one way or another.”

The scent is getting stronger, Alpha-Boomer, Derby has stopped. I’m guessing he’s less than a mile away.”

Step gently, Pal, let’s not let him know we’re coming.”

When they came within a quarter mile, Boomer dismounted, and he and Daisy carefully advanced until they saw Derby’s campsite.

Derby! Come out or I’ll shoot you where you lie!

Too late, Daisy figured out the faint, similar odor, “Alpha-Boomer! There are two of them!
