“He’s been evicted”

Previously:

Before his hand reached the butt of his old Colt .44, both Susie and Jay had their Peacemakers drawn and pointing at his fat head, “Take a long, close look at our badges, fat-boy.”

Y-y-you’re marshals?”

Yes, and we’re taking over this jail. You may leave now—or get into one of those empty cells in the back,” Jay took some pleasure in this. The sheriff sputtering, decided to leave.

In Dreadwood, Boomer Jack drew his Remington .44s and fired, amazingly, in the time it took for him to draw and fire, Hickok stood up, turned and fired both of his Navy Colt .36s—the bushwhackers didn’t even get their guns clear of their holsters. They had no further need for their guns—or their holsters.

Hickok walked outside and Boomer had to ask, “How did you know?”

“Reflection,” Hickok replied, “The fella sitting across from me had flat-lensed spectacles.”

Lucky.”

Yes, by intent. I could also see his cards. The real luck was you comin’ along when you did—both those fellas have two holes in them.”

Shouldn’t you keep a solid wall behind you?’

I should, but that was the only seat left when I arrived. I made a little money and was about to lose that hand when those fellas showed up. Come to think of it, Marshal; why are you still awake?”

Couldn’t sleep; wider awake now.”

Well, I’ll bet the restaurant is open,” Hickok suggested as he turned to the others, “Will you fellas drag these two over to the undertakers for me and the marshal?”

Food might help,” Boomer said as they started for Seven Tables.

Doc Shouse leading the posse, soon arrived in Murdo with the prisoners, who were then quickly herded safely into jail cells, “Where’s the sheriff?”

“Where’s the sheriff?”

He’s been evicted,” Chief-Deputy US Marshal Blackmon quipped, “But I suspect he may contest his eviction soon as he can round up some help.”

Which is exactly what Bulgebottom was working on at the Murdo Saloon.

This wasn’t over, no sirree, not by a long shot, GENTLE READER!

I’ve heard of the sheriff having to hold off a lynch mob…but the marshals having to hold off a corrupt lawman is interesting. I think my hair looks better what do you think everyone?
