“Flutters! Glad you are here, we have an important message for Marshal Blackmon that you must deliver immediately.”
“Master says I must rest a bit before my wings fall off.”
“How long?” Daisy wasn’t unsympathetic, but the message HAD to go out.
“Can I have fifteen minutes?”
Season VI, Chapter 6 Renegade Marshal, Episode 17:
“It will take that long to tell you all that has happened…and what will happen if we don’t act—I wish I knew where to begin…” Daisy was interrupted by Flutters.
“At the beginning?”
It took the entire fifteen minutes—and more for Daisy, Alice & Benji to tell the story. Daisy ended the story, “Flutters, tell Marshal Blackmon to ride here as fast as she can and to bring everyone with her. Tell her there’s about to be a war here and we are terribly outnumbered.”
“Mac told me that Boomer has gone rogue—is this true?”
“It is, apparently. Not only that, but the only reason this town exists is because all the townspeople didn’t die when the fates required. This town never existed—yet here it is.”
“I’m out of here—unless there’s something more?”
“Fly, Larry!”
“So that, James, is why we must work together.”
“Danged if that ain’t the strangest tale I ever heard. What now?”
“I need sleep. Go to the jail and tell Erik to release Derby and tell Derby to get out of town…or die.”
“I don’t understand it, but I will do it. Then?”
“I must talk with Susan, then I’ll be along to the jail, you and Erik get ready to receive unfriendly visitors.”
A few hours later they began to arrive in Dreadwood—first to gather were the various business owners, followed by Town Marshal Boomer Jack, Chief Deputy Town Marshal Erik Hare, Deputy US Marshal Jay Cooper and Deputy US Marshal Susan Miller (who’d been told by her Alice that she must stand with Boomer Jack, regardless of what he’d done).
Next to arrive was McLintock, Bulgebottom, and their men. McLintock guessed correctly that the townspeople who’d been paying him for the privilege of remaining in business, were siding against Boomer Jack. He and his men joined the townspeople.
McLintock, when he was satisfied they were in position looked up and down the line, a quick count revealed they outnumbered the marshals by twenty to seven…
“Shoot them down!”
To be Continued…
Now that is one hell of a cliff hanger!
