“Every one of those ‘wimmin’ can shoot better than most men,” Big Mac rumbled his most ominous rumble, “Something you fellas ought to keep in mind.”
“I-I din’t mean no disrespect, Mister,” Moose replied, “You kin set up camp behind th’ stockade.”
“None taken, Mister Callahan,” Jay smiled, “Big Mac is correct, however, we didn’t bring the ladies along just because they’re pretty—they’re part of our gang. Are you the boss of this outfit?”
“Naw,” a relieved Callahan replied, “Mister Schwartzkopf went down into the valley to the village on business. He’ll be back in the morning.”
“Crap,” Boomer thought to himself—a thought shared by the others.
Season 8—Chapter 6—O Canada—Episode 11:
Continuing our story—at the gates of Fort Defiance… “Johann Schwartzkopf?” Boomer asked, smiling as if this was actually GOOD news.
“Yep—that’s him. You know him?”
“Yes, yes we do,” Mac smiled. Those who know Mac recognized the smile as a grimmace.
“We’ll go now and set up camp, if you fellas don’t mind,” Jay said, “Then me and Miss Blackmon will meet with you in an hour—okay?”
“Yessir, Mr. Cooper,” Callahan, “I’m sure Mr. Schwartzkopf will be pleased to see you folks.”
“I’m sure he will,” Jay replied as they rode off to the campsite.
“Well?” Blackmon asked, “Are we in?”
“We are, but so is Johann Schwartzkopf,” Boomer said, “He’s not expected until tomorrow morning.”
“You and I will meet with the foreman, Callahan,” Jay added, “You may want to give him a demonstration of your gun-handling.”
“What does he look like?”
“A man,” Jay quipped.
An hour later—inside the “Trading” Post…
“Mr. Callahan, this is ex-Marshal Blackmon from Hartle’s Corners Missouri,” Jay grinned, “You may have heard of her. Marshal, may I introduce Mr. Moose Callahan, the foreman here at Fort Defiance.”
Before Callahan could extend a handshake Susie drew her .44 and had it under his nose, “Pleased to meet you, Moose.”
“I-I-I’m from Missouri,” Callahan stuttered, “Please put yer six-shooter down, m-m-marshal. I was boy living on th’ farm jist outside of Hartle’s Corners an’ I heard of y-y-you.”
“The boss is back!” Frank Apple burst through the door with the unexpected news.
This would NOT be good news…
