“Are we there yet?”

Fort Savage BannerPreviously: Cooper heard of a novel treaty negotiated with the Ojibwe somewhere in northern Minnesota and decided to investigate. They learned about the treaty and how it was negotiated.

They then traveled to northwestern Minnesota all the way to the Canadian border where they met with RCMP Master Sergeant Murphy Yatkov and learned how they negotiated with their First Nation people.

Lt. Colonel Cooper reported his findings to President Grant, who in turn changed their status from militia to regular US Cavalry and detailed him and his now-expanded troop to Fort Savage with orders to assume command.

Chapter 6—Loco Part III—Episode 1…President Grant wasn’t certain about integrated military units, but he was sure about Lt. Colonel Cooper, and by God if this slow-talkin’ West Virginian said it would work, then by God, it probably would.

He also knew he had to get Major McClellan replaced at Fort Savage—he’d heard reports of renegade US cavalrymen at that godforsaken outpost and McClellan had taken no action. He feared that McClellan himself might be involved. Who better than Cooper and his militia to take-on McClellan? Who else would?

Meanwhile—some twenty miles out from Loco… Our unsuspecting marshals were making their way towards Fort Savage—and the mess that Grant was concerned about.

They too, were planning on finding the renegade cavalry soldiers and arresting them. They, however, were unaware of what the president knew, or rather, suspected: that Major McClellan was involved.

What they were aware of was the heat, the dust, and the boredom.
