Chapter 6—Loco Part III—Episode 2…Meanwhile, at Fort Savage…Major Silas McClellan was giving Captain Obediah McMillan his orders, “My sources at the War Department tell me that Grant has given regular army status to a rag-tag militia unit and given their commander orders to take over this post.”

Interesting, Major. I expect you wish this unit be engaged?”

“Interesting, Major. I expect you wish this unit be engaged?”

Yes, Captain,” McClellan continued, “I’m assigning 1st Platoon to augment your force. You will tell Lt. Karstenbrock that we’re assigned to engage a mutinous militia unit and destroy it—taking no prisoners.”

That will leave you with just the ‘Black Horse’ platoon, you can’t trust them.”

True, but they have no idea about our little operation here—unless some of your fellas are talking to them.”

No sir! They hate them for their pridefullness—just ’cause they served with General Sheridan durin’ th’ war, an’ their matched horses ‘n all.”

And with the typical cavalry-movie fanfare—the combined platoons departed Fort Savage—at least two hours before Chris and her deputies approached the fort.

Meanwhile—Our heroes were more than a little surprised when they recognized… Hiram Silverthorn, Junior, approaching!

Hiram Silverthorn, Junior, approached our heroes

“I needed a weekend vacation,” Hiram grinned, “And the Beagamute™* sent me here.”

I needed a weekend vacation,” Hiram grinned, “And the Beagamute™* sent me here.”

Coo-coo* sent you??” Boomer asked.

She did! At my request,” Hiram was grinning ear to ear, “I explained I wanted in on your adventures. She explained that only ‘real world’ people are allowed to time travel. I replied that dad had already visited the so-called real world, as had Big A.”

And then she agreed?”

Nope.”

How did you convince her?”

I scratched her behind her ears, and afterwards I asked her if that felt good. She wagged her tail. Then I said, ‘But you’ve been dead since 2002, how can that feel at all?’ The next thing I knew I was riding this dusty trail. Wearing a badge.”

I, for one, am very glad to see you,” Chris was delighted—after all Hiram, Jr. was one of the best peace officers in the state, “Have you solved the murder yet? Who was murdered?”

Just as Hiram was about to speak—the episode ended.

* “The Beagamute™” and “Coo-coo,” both refer, of course to “Cujo,” the actual name of a real dog…but also the title of a book (and movie) written by Stephen King. There has been no problem with using the name thus far—but since I am against plagiarism in any form, henceforth, we will refer to our “Cujo” either as either “The Beagamute™” or “Coo-coo.” I don’t think she’d mind.

To be Continued…

Oh, not that I can speak for Stephen King, but surely he knows lots of people have named their dogs Cujo. He probably enjoys knowing the other Cujos were so sweet and well loved. 🙂 (But Coo-Coo is sweet. We mainly call Pepper “Poodle” and he seems to like it.)

Cujo lkied “Cuckcoo” [Note spelling correction…courtesy of Big Mac, (below)] about like Pepper likes “Poodle.” I’m pretty-sure Mr. King wouldn’t mind, as well…but…still. 😉
