Fort Savage BannerPreviously: All four were parched beyond all reason (riding across the desert sometimes does that), and a vote was taken.

By a vote of four to zero, they decided check-out this cantina.

No one noticed the sign tacked by the door.

At least not immediately.

They shouldn’t have been surprised.

Well,” Hiram huffed, “It appears I’m not welcome here.”

What was your first clue?” Mac rumbled. It was not a happy rumble.

I wonder if women—women who are not trollops—are welcome here,” Susie smiled—it was not a happy smile.

Shall we go in anyway?” Chris wasn’t really asking—if you looked closely, GENTLE READER, you would have seen her gun-hand flexing. Just a little.

Chapter 6—Loco Part III—Fort Savage—Episode 4…& so—they went inside and were greeted by…

We don’t’ serve Indians here!” the barkeep declared, and went on to make matters worse, “Or Nigras.”

We don't serve Indians here

“We don’t’ serve Indians here!”

I am a United States Deputy Marshal, son, on federal business,” Silverthorn declared, “And I’ve ridden a far piece to get here. You DAMN-WELL better draw me a tin of that brown ale—NOW!”

Big Mac rumbled, “Y’all best draw one for me as well—BEFORE I draw my 8- gauge an’ start takin’ target practice on your supply of rot-gut whiskey.”

Susie, for her part, just grinned as she placed her right hand on that big Colt .45 she carried.

Chris moved closer to the barkeep and whispered so only he could hear her, “I am in charge of these deputies, and I will tell you in no uncertain terms, that if you don’t start serving me and my deputies, you will find yourself feet up under six feet of sand.”

NOW JIST HOLD ON!” A voice from behind them shouted, “You best stand down!”

They turned to look and two cavalrymen were pointing their Sharps carbines at them.

Drop yer guns—slow and easy-like.”

Major McClellan has a nice brig jest a-waitin’ fer you—one you ain’t likely t’get out of.”

They have two shots—we have six,” Chris observed.

Yeah, but it seems as though they got the drop on us—two of us are gonna get hurt,” Mac rumbled.

Oh GREAT!GENTLE READER—Why does this sort of thing ALWAYS happen on Friday?

To be Continued…
