Previously: The rest was soon over, the canines each riding with their humans, the great sentient horses were again galloping.
Too late Flutters spotted Larry and his captors and as he turned around to report, and on his way back to his friends—he saw the ambush—and his friends riding at the gallop.
Directly into the ambush.
There was nothing more he could do.
They would be there before he could warn them.
Chapter 8—Fort Justice—Episode 1… There is that moment—when something unexpected occurs—when you hesitate; unsure of what to do. That moment occurred when the ambushers opened-fire.
A bullet grazed Pal’s (AKA Hanska-Enapay or “Tall-Brave”) right shoulder and struck Boomer’s shin—breaking the bone. The great sentient horse, leader of the modern Eagle Point Herd of Sentient Horses, hesitated less than a second and whinnied, “Run, run like you’ve never run before!”
All were tired from a long gallop—yet all responded with an impossible burst of speed.
Boomer let go of the reins and gripped his saddle-horn with his left hand, and Daisy with his right—and then passed-out from the pain. Daisy quickly grabbed the reins in her teeth and somehow wrapped them around Boomer’s right hand and the saddle-horn (Don’t ask me how, GENTLE READER, I haven’t a clue).
Chris, Sarah and Susie, all sharpshooters of no small skill, returned fire and managed to hit two of the four ambushers, and in so doing, thoroughly convinced the other two that pursuing the marshals was not really a good idea.
Pal’s charge last just long enough to overtake and completely surprise Larry and his captors.
Without orders or hesitation Chris dismounted and rushed to attend Boomer & Pal, while the others disarmed and subdued Larry’s captors.
They left the interrogation to Susie Blackmon.
“What took you guys so long?”
“Shut-up, Larry,” Flutters squawked.
To be continued…
