Brave Hawk

General’s Orders Banner Previously: “Brave Hawk,” Little Wolf replied, “My brother—and War Chief of our people. But I think your War Department might not accept him.”

“The War Department will accept whoever I choose.”

“We shall see.”

“Oh Grandfather,” Hiram disagreed, “Colonel Cooper is a friend of President Grant and has First Nation officers and NCOs in his former command at Fort Justice in Nevada.”

“This is true?” Little Wolf was a little surprised, “Very well. I will send for him.”

Season Ten—Chapter 3—General’s Orders—Episode 4… A remarkably short time later, Brave Hawk Silverthorn arrived at the trading post, “You wish to see me my brother?”

Colonel Cooper met with Brave Hawk

“You wish to see me my brother?”

“Yes,” Little Wolf replied, “This is Colonel Phineas Cooper, here in Moosehead County to establish an Army outpost at the old trading post stockade near Devil Track Lake. He is looking to recruit local people to man the outpost.”

“Why are you telling me this? The long-knives do not recruit First Nation people.”

“Not true, Brave Hawk,” Cooper replied, “I had several First Nation Ojibwe people serving in my militia. They are now regular cavalry troopers serving at Fort Justice. You brother suggested you would make a fine officer, and your experience as the Eagle Point Band of Ojibwe War Chief would be an asset to the outpost.”

“We do not fight as the long-knives do.”

“I know this, Brave Hawk,” Cooper smiled, “My troopers have been trained in Ojibwe tactics as well as cavalry tactics—it has served us well, allowing us to defeat much larger forces in Nevada.”

“You require a scout?”

“I require a captain. Second in command initially, and eventually, outpost commander.”

“Who else are you talking with?”

“Anyone who will listen—and with whom I approve; all are welcome to apply white, black, native—this does not matter. What matters is heart.”

Brave Hawk was silent for several minutes, as he considered what he had learned, “You!
