Previously: Brothers Brave Hawk and James Silverthorn met the marshals.
“The Marshal is dead,” James greeted, “Killed shortly after your last visit here.”
“Why didn’t you kill Almonzo, Deputy Boomer?” Brave Hawk wanted an answer, “He killed the marshal shortly after you returned to the future.”
“Let’s discuss this inside, Brave Hawk,” James’ suggestion should be understood as more of an order, “Over a flask of black ale.”
Adventure Ten—Searching for Almonzo—Episode Two…Inside Silverthorn’s
“Why didn’t you kill him when you had the chance?”
“On our last visit, we weren’t here in Danger Bay, we were up at Devil Track Lake dealing with a fur-trapping war. We captured or killed all but a few of the raiders, and were leaving to track down those few who escaped our trap. I had no idea at the time that Almonzo Slater was one of the raiders. We hadn’t ridden more than a mile or so when suddenly, and without warning, we found ourselves back in 2014,” Boomer replied, “I was informed that he was among them, and apparently had a chance to shoot him—in the back.”
“We don’t intentionally shoot people in the back,” Chris was a little angry, “It’s easy to judge after the fact—TOO EASY.”
“I’m kinda new to this time travel stuff,” a deeper-even-than-even-Big Mac’s-rumble voice rumbled, “But in our time it would be called a ‘cheap-shot,’ and scorned.”
“This,” Mac grinned, “Is my brother, my less-kind brother, Merle, Brave Hawk, you ought not to make him angry.”
“Perhaps now,” Linda uttered her first words of this episode, “You might tell us where we might find this Almonzo Slater.
“Word is he and his gang are in the area of Forest City,” James replied, “There’s no law there and he runs the town.”
“Okay,” Mac said, “I have a plan. Merle—you take Chris and Linda and scout Forest City—don’t make waves, alright? Just make nice an learn what you can about their operations. Jay? You and Sarah head for Devil Track Lake and see if Slater has been there, find out all you can—touch base with Boomer’s Great-Grandfather, Silas Boardman, I believe now was when that old lumberman dallied with law enforcement.”
“He didn’t like it much, he was a lumberman,” Boomer quipped, “I think that was about the time his first wife divorced him and married a fellow 20 years younger (that and the fact he was a lumberman are true—the rest is pure fiction). I hope to get the opportunity to meet him.”
“I understand that, Boomer, but I want you with me,” Mac continued, “You and I will go to Moosehead City and get the lay of the land there—I need your guns with me—just in case.”
“What about me?” Flutters asked.
“You and the dog-people take to the woods around Forest City—along the way see if you can hook-up with any sentient wolves and ask them to help.”
Well—GENTLE READER—it appears Mac has set things in motion—whaddaya think?
