“Well, yeah; I just turned forty.”

“No, sonny,” Medford grinned, “Although I could do worse; I’m patterned after your grandfather. His given name plus the name of the town he grew-up near; Medford, Minnesota. How is he doing?”

“Not well, but he’s a tough old coot.”

“What would he say if he heard you call him that?”

“He would say ‘Damn right I am!’ and grin,” Andrew replied, “I know this because we’ve had that conversation.”

“Okay, I’m on my way,” Boomer replied to a radio message; turning to the others, he said, “I gotta go, there’s some trouble in town.”

“You need help?” Mac asked.

“No, Deputy Simpson is there; he needs the help.”

Season 13—Adventure 3—Codgers Return—Episode 4—Scene 1…Downtown Lakeview City…

Newly-minted Sheriff Boomer found the situation handled when he arrived at the “Bar & Grille” in downtown Lakeview City, “You work fast, Chief Deputy.”

“I LIKE the sound of that, Sheriff,” Allen “Big-Ass” Simpson grinned, “Just a couple of the boys having a debate.”

“The message I received said it was a brawl with ten or more involved.”

“Yeah, that’s about right,” Simpson laughed, “Just a couple of the boys, and ten of their girlfriends.”

“Oh,” the sheriff laughed, “Light work, eh? By the way, where’s your squad?”

“AJ has it, I asked him to refurbish it a little; that old 427 hasn’t got nearly the get up and go these 5.0s have, and it was beginning to use oil.”

“Good call.”

“Are you going to make your HQ here?”

“I can’t. I’m required to have my office in Moosehead City, by law. You, Chief Deputy, get to run this office.”

“You gonna move there?”

“And give-up my place on the lakeshore? You have GOT to be kidding me! It’s a fifteen-minute drive from home to Moosehead City.”

Meanwhile—aboard the Streamliner passing behind Boomer & Big A… The train’s departure had been delayed an hour by a mechanical malfunction down the line at a busy railroad crossing, “There, Bambi,” Gina grinned, “Is where we assassinate Sheriff Boomer.”

“Only if we can find some reliable help in Chicago.”

“Do you really think that will be a problem?”

“No, I just like to worry.”

“There’s a couple of fellas in Minneapolis, I’d like to talk to before we go all the way to Chicago,” Aleeve was thinking out loud, “They have a solid reputation; and have kept themselves below the radar in the cities.”

“Why didn’t you mention this earlier?”

“I’d forgotten their names; and try as I might the names didn’t come to me until just now. Craig Zachman and Ronald Glaub.”

“Suffering a little ‘CRS’ there, husband?”

“Well, yeah; I just turned forty.”
