“Cops arriving!”

Back to Normal Banner ©Jack BoardmanPreviously: “We need accommodations for nine,” the leader of the group announced as she approached the desk, “You don’t rent to Indians, do you?”

“We follow the law.”

“Too bad you have to—the law needs to be changed.”

“Good luck with that,” Linda laughed, “You do know Moosehead County is the Eagle Point Ojibwe Reservation—right?”

“You’re kidding, right?”

Season 13—Adventure 7—Back to Normal?—Episode 6—Scene 1… At the desk… “I’m sorry Ma’am, I was just having a little fun at your expense,” Calvin Hobbs grinned, “I’m half Native American, as is my brother over yonder. I apologize.”

“Accepted,” Linda replied, “I’m always open to being had like that—builds character, I believe.”

As soon as her guests left Linda placed two calls; the first to the sheriff’s office, and the second to Karen.

She gave the deputy who answered the license plate numbers of the guests’ cars, and he said there were no such plates on record and he would dispatch deputies to check out her guests.

Karen informed her she was on her way in—and to be very careful and stay out-of-the-way when the sheriffs arrive.

Back to Normal?—Episode 6—Scene 2… Outside Karen’s… As it had to happen, GENTLE READER, the closest Sheriff’s squad was occupied by Sgt. Eagle Talon and Andy Silverthorn and they arrived roughly ten minutes later, followed closely by Doc McLean and Karen Thayer.

Two of the guests just happened to be looking out the window when the sheriff’s squad arrived—and panicked, “Cops arriving!”

While seven of the cabin’s occupants ran for their car, two chose to engage the deputies and fired at deputies.

Andy Silverthorn stopped the squad and both deputies returned fire at the two—killing both.

Sergeant Eagle Talon dropped to the ground, badly wounded by two shotgun blasts.

Andy shot the two, mortally wounding both—but the rest sped off.

As Doc ran to the wounded deputy, Andy took-off after the big old Hudson station wagon.

“Karen!” McLean yelled, “Get paramedics!”

“Already called—on the way! How’s he doing?”

“What can I do, Doc?”

“Oh Linda!” Doc replied, “Put direct pressure on his chest wound—it will help him breathe.”

Moments later the rescue squad arrived, “Doc—are you going to ride with us?”

“I’ll go, Doc!” Linda exclaimed, “You get your gear and meet us at the hospital!”

“Linda will ride with you—I’ll meet you at the hospital.”

“You’re the boss, Doc, see you there!”

Back to Normal?—Episode 6—Scene 3… On a dirt road north of Moosehead City… Jimmy Silverthorn was in pursuit—easily keeping-up with the slow, poor-handling old Hudson. He was too angry to be smart—he was, after all outnumbered 7:1 by the bad guys.

He’d be in deep trouble if they stopped.
