“What made you decide to apply here?”

“Well, yes,” Linda White Eagle replied, “I suppose it could. But most of us have never experienced it.”

“It seems to only happen to those most closely associated with Cujo, the Great Northern Beagamute—she among other things, is the gatekeeper of ‘The Great Beyond’ and more often seems to appear just before her associates get called to another time.”

Linda added, “It appears you are getting called as we speak.”

“Oh—GREAT!” Joey exclaimed as they faded.

County Attorney—Episode 6—Scene 2… Law office of Lepus & Ames… “Tell me about yourself,” Melissa Ames said as she escorted Hammar into the office, “What made you decide to apply here?”

“Yours was the first law office I saw in this area.”

“Oh,” She replied, laughing, “I was hoping it was our reputation. Now, about you—why did you leave Miller, Fenster, Wilson and Blott?”

“Because I wanted to specialize in criminal law—it’s in what I excelled at the University of Minnesota School of Law. I began my career with Jones & Wilcox, a Minneapolis firm specializing in criminal law—and was good at it—good enough, that I was recruited by M. F. W. and B, with a promise I’d be assigned to their criminal law department. Instead, they placed me in litigation. After several years of trying to get into that department…”

“..You walked out the door,” Ames finished his sentence, “What was your success ratio?”

“Criminal or litigation?”

“Both.”

“About 2:1 successful cases defending, and a bit less prosecuting.”

“Not bad. How do you feel about being assigned to defend someone you are certain is guilty?”

“I believe strongly in the presumption of innocence,” He replied, “It’s my job to give the defendant the best possible service. I draw the line at presenting evidence that I believe to be tainted.”

“How do you determine tainted evidence?”

“By taking the time to investigate my suspicion, before and during trial. I tried to maintain good relationships with law enforcement people during my time with Jones & Wilcox, and that paid off.”

“Interesting, that’s pretty much how I worked my cases,” Ames said, “You will still have to litigate as we’re not just involved with criminal law.”

“Into everyone’s life a little rain must fall.”

“Good. The County Court is looking for public defenders, you should drive to Moosehead City and throw your hat into that ring.”

“Directions?”

“Just head north on Historic 61 and it will bring you right to the courthouse—about a half-hour drive.

I have episodes written through Sep 16th. Here’s an excerpt from the 16th:
There to greet them were two city marshals—City Marshal Debra Wennen-Miller and Deputy City Marshal Joey Jerkowitz.” 🙂
