Martha ‘Calamity Jane” Canary

Season 14—Adventure 4—Gangsters—Episode 4—Scene 1… The corridor outside the Sheriff’s Office… “Where?”

“Yes, Boomer,” Chris replied, “Where in the past can we send them?”

“Nowhere.”

“Nowhere?”

“It’s a great place, Chris. A place from which there is no escape—yet.”

“Yet?”

“Yup. My RW self—made a 19th Century town for future use, and it has not been placed anywhere on a map,” Boomer replied, “So, there is nowhere to go from the town.”

“Oh—GOODY!” Chris exclaimed, “May I take them there?”

“Nope, we need you here,” Boomer grinned, “I’m thinking Jimmy Hickok is the one for that job.”

“Okay. I want to see the town—let’s move-on to Scene 2!”

Episode 4—Scene 2… 21st to 19th Century transition… “Gentlemen—I have been assigned the job of taking you someplace where Farenholt can’t get to you.”

“Where?”

“Not where, gentlemen,” Hickok grinned, “When. You fellas and I are going to the 19th Century.”

“When?”

“Now!”

And just like that—they were in the Town Marshal’s office, somewhere, in 1873.

“I suppose you’re going put us in them cells—right?”

“No Mr. Wilcox,” Hickok replied, “That would be cruel & inhumane, you fellas will have the run of the town.”

“What would stop us from leaving town?” Samuel Smith asked.

“Me, if necessary—then again, there’s nowhere for you four tenderfeet to go.”

“We could get killed just walking outside,” Chauncey Fenster protested, “We ain’t got guns.”

“Very few people carry guns here, just like the real 19th Century,” Hickok was telling the truth, “Go outside so you can see for yourselves.”

Episode 4—Scene 3… Outside the Jail… The four men walked around town, and to their surprise—found no one armed.

They stood there, in front of the jail for a few minutes, “Dang Chauncey, they’re NOT armed!”

They went back inside where the sheriff gave them each a rent voucher to use at Maude’s Rooming House. Four happy men were soon settled at Maude’s.

Episode 4—Scene 4… Inside the Jail… She walked briskly into the jailhouse and announced, “I’m Martha Jane Burk, marshal. I am descended from Martha ‘Calamity Jane” Canary!”

“That’s not possible!” Hickok exclaimed, “This is 1873—the real Calamity Jane was 22 years old! You appear a bit older—like ten years older.”

“You’re too kind,” She grinned, “I’m actually 20 years older than that. Oh—and you and I will marry when we return to the 21st Century!”

The look on Jimmy’s face—priceless.

“All true,” a doggish voice said from behind them.
