Season 14—Adventure 6—PIONEER DANGER BAY—Episode 1—Scene 1… Danger Bay Railroad Depot… William McGinty, Abigail Anders, Sam Jones, Susie Jones, Thomas Paulos, Rand Paulos (no, they are not related—but they are a couple), and James Smith and Henrietta Smith, were the only passengers leaving the train at Danger Bay.
This was only the third time a train had stopped at the new Danger Bay Railroad Station as it had opened just three weeks prior to their arrival—the old one having burned to the ground six months previously.
The town council—over the objections of the Silverthorns and Farkleberrys had decided the village main street should be atop the bluff rather than along Danger Bay itself.
This would last only about a year before opposition stopped the development there—save for the railroad station (the buildings of the bluff development and the station remain there, with the town a historic site, and the preserved railroad station still serving the village).
After walking through the adjacent town, the McGinty gang returned to the station to await the carriages that would take them to main village along the lake, “There’s a help wanted sign in the marshal’s office window, James, go apply for the job—with your experience, you should be able to get the job.”
“I was thinking the same thing, Bill,” James Smith replied as he affixed his badge to his lapel, “Rand, Thomas, put your badges on as well.”
“Rand, Thomas, put your badges on as well.”
The three walked back to the town marshal’s office and spoke with the caretaker, “Has anyone applied for the job?”
“Not, so far,” the caretaker replied, “Marshal…”
“Smith, James Smith, sir,” Smith replied, “From Southtown, down near Albert Lea. These two fellas are Thomas & Rand Paulos, my deputies. We’re here to apply for the job.”
“We’re a small village,” the caretaker replied, “We need but one.”
“You only have to pay for one—and get three experienced lawmen. We have modest financial needs.”
“Very well, then, you’re hired.”
Episode 1—Scene 2… Three weeks later in the marshal’s office… The three had spent the past three weeks making the rounds of both “Upper Town” as the area around the railroad station was known, and the lower village on Danger Bay and introducing themselves.
James (Little Wolf) Silverthorn of the Eagle Point Band of Ojibwe, and his father Samuel (Gray Wolf), Chief, welcomed them and wished them well (although, GENTLE READER, they were more than a little suspicious of their motives and story).
Medlar Farkleberry (the FIRST Medlar) was less than pleased, but welcomed them in a small-town-stand-offish sorta way.
The rest of the village population seemed pleased to meet them.
“I expect we’ll have some problems with the Silverthorns.”
“I expect we’ll have some problems with Silverthorn.”
“I agree, boss,” Thomas replied, “They’ll be the first we should eliminate.”
“I hear there’s a town a bit north of here, Moosehead City, with an US Marshal’s office,” Smith said, “That’s where we’ll have the rest of our boys meet up. If we can take-over Moosehead City…”
“The rest of the county will become ours,” Rand finished James’ sentence.
