“Pleased to meet you, Captain Lincoln—How may I help you?”

Fort Dakota Banner ©J. BoardmanPreviously: Captain Boomer and Captain Lincoln arrived at Fort Dakota.

“Friendly Natives, Captain?”

“They are quite friendly—and a necessary ally,” Boomer replied, “There simply not enough regular troopers to patrol the Black Hills.”

“I expect that means the Wyoming part as well.”

“Exactly,” Lt. Jerkovich replied, “So we’re stretched very thin.”

Episode 10… Scene 3… Inside the Posse Hideout… Chris has a plan… It had been only a day or so since Captain Boomer and company had been mustered into the local militia—and he just sent a telegram.

“Boomer and the others will not be returning anytime soon,” Wyatt began, “And the Deadwood town marshal has been bought and paid-for by the criminal element here in Deadwood. “We’ll remain here and clean-up the town.”

“That sounds like fun!” Chris exclaimed.

“You have a warped sense of fun, m’dear,” Wyatt replied.

“Thank you.”

“Actually, Captain McKinley,” Lincoln smiled, “We’d like to know how we may help you.”

“We know, McKinley,” Captain Boomer added, “That you are stretched pretty thin, and have heard that the Sioux bands have a couple of renegade bands terrorizing the peaceful Sioux here and in Wyoming.”

“Well,” McKinley replied, “I figured I’d just let them settle their own differences and not risk the lives of my troopers.”

“Gee,” Mac grinned, “I wonder what my old friend General Whitcomb thinks about that?”

“You know General Whitcomb, Sergeant Major?”

“He was Colonel Whitcomb when we served together during the war.”

“Oh—you were his cook?”

“No,” Mac replied, “His battalion Sergeant-Major.”

“Impossible!”

“You have a telegraph here—contact him now!”

Mac and his fellow militia-members all grinned—widely as Whitcomb’s aid had his aid send the message and repeated McKinley’s reply, “Damn-right McIntyre was my Battalion Sergeant-Major, and a damn-fine one at that. Do you have a problem with that?”

“You’d best send a reply now—if you wish to continue your career.”

Episode 1…Scene 2… Meanwhile—Back in Deadwood… Chris and the Wyatt visited the City Marshal’s office.

The Town Marshal, William McCoy, and his Chief Deputy, Jon Hopkins were in the office, “How may I help you?” Marshal McCoy asked.

“By telling us you’ve made some arrests in the shooting at Nuttal & Mann’s Saloon,” Wyatt Earp asked.

McCoy smiled, “No arrests were made—because we didn’t think it was necessary, as only scum had the misfortune to be shot during the ruckus.”
