Pettifogger’s escape

“Let us by, marshal,” Easy-Ed found his courage, “Them marshals had no cause. If you don’t, we going t’ ride you an’ yer little deputy down.”

Easy-Ed hadn’t noticed Deputy US Marshals Blackmon, Sarah & Jay Cooper, Shouse and Miller arrive on the boardwalk outside the hotel.

“I just don’t think that is all that smart, cowboy,” Marshal Blackmon said just loud enough for him to hear.

To complicate matters a little more as Big Mac, Larry, Boomer, Kidd and AJ ambled up behind Earp.

That was enough for Easy-Ed and his merry band of cowboys and they quickly turned and galloped out of town.

Season VI—Chapter 9—Range War, Episode 4:

After the McCullough confrontation, and for the first time in weeks, most of the time travelers were together again; the dog-people and bird-persons were telling each other and comparing their respective adventures with an occasional burst laughter (in the form of a “SQUAWK, WOOF, ARF or AR-ROOO”); the gathered marshals told of their respective adventures (and misadventures) along the way to and in Wichita.

Big Mac motioned to Boomer & Larry to follow him. The stagecoach was pulling into Wichita; the stagecoach St Louis District US Marshal Adrian Pettifogger, and his brother and Chief Deputy US Marshal, Anson Pettifogger were probably waiting for. They were not horsemen, and Mac expected they’d been laying-low until the stage arrived.

“The stage is late, Anson,” Adrian Pettifogger had been pacing the hotel lobby, not daring to step outside for fear of McIntyre seeing him. He could see the marshals gathered across the street and was very concerned that McIntyre would soon come looking for him, “This may work on our favor.”

“How so?”

“The stage driver will want to leave as soon as we board, to make up time.”

It was then he saw the stagecoach coming up the street at a rather impressive speed, “Let’s go, now. We just might get aboard and on our way before they notice.”

“Can’t they just follow the stage?”

“I paid the stable owner to drive all their horses out on the prairie and to lock up the stable. They won’t be coming after us anytime soon.”

The Pettifoggers quickly scrambled into the stagecoach—but their joy at having escaped Big Mac and his deputies evaporated when they heard, “Hold the stage, driver!”

“Hold the stage, driver!”
